Trees are also the determining factor in many cases where you are trying to sell a home. Instead of trying to sell your home by making a lot of improvements, such as new carpeting and tile, plant trees. Find here
would this method work in the very poor gold-country soils in country Victoria, where our lower rainfall and poorer soils have less bacteria and nutrient than the lovely soils in Queensland. I was planning to use a heavy machine to dig a wide swathe 2-4m wide and 1.5m deep to plant a fire break with fire retardant plants along a fence line (not up against fence but 4m inside fence line)and then add compost and mulch on top of the soil. I was hoping that this would enable the tree roots to penetrate into the concrete like layer of soils under the mulch, which I very much doubt that they would be able to do if the soil was left undisturbed with just compost and mulch put on top. What are your thoughts, based on your experience, on this idea? I am loving learning from you. Keep up the inspirational work you are doing. Many Thanks, Jay Morris

Thank you for this information! I have also wondered for some time if you can use glossy paper (from junk mail or magazines) in the garden/worm farm/compost. I have avoided it so far, but it's so easy to find it would be great to utilise it. Can you shed any light on this?

I don't use the glossies in the veggie garden. Firstly I find them too hard to poke holes through to plant my seedlings. Secondly, they take too long to break down and seem to smother the soil. I plant through the newspaper layer - with these holes, I feel this makes the newspaper layer far more permeable and the soil able to breathe.
