Thanks for the post. .very informative. We are a low income family of 6 trying to live a more sustainable life. I currently use a vinegar/dishwashing liquid/washing soda mix/eucalyptus mix for all my general household cleaning and Rhonda of Down To Earth blog's laundry liquid and soap recipes for washing and laundry use. They are very cost effective hence the appeal. How much do you find you spend on castile soap for all of the things you use it for? Jess (Melbourne)

Castile is pure olive oil soap – what you are talking about is just "soap" almost all soaps are made with vegetable oils – esp in Australia – the term castile will always refer to pure olive oil soap – anything high in olive oil with other oils is called "bastile" and any other soaps are just soap. Liquid soap is liquid soap – never ever called castile unless its pure olive oil soap. Real castile is a low lathering mild soap and not suitable for most cleaning uses as coconut oil soap is better for dishes and cars and clothing washing. For skin a combination of oils makes a great lathery but mild soap. If you cant make your own – dont buy from the stores but find a local soapmaker who can supply you with real liquid or bar soaps and you will know you are supporting a craftsperson and helping your skin and enviroment.

Thanks for the information. I'm a bit confused though – you say don't mix castille soap with vinegar but also say add a spoon of vinegar to make dishwashing liquid?

Thanks for the post Morag. I use hemp-based castile soap in my shaving cream recipe (no other petro-chemical nasties in the cream). It really does feel good on the skin. I had no idea of the soap's general versatility though, and will be trying it out.

Thanks for pointing this out – I have corrected it on the post. The method I use is to put a squirt of castile soap in the wash water and a splash of vinegar in the rinse water (not mixed). This is by far the simplest and most effective.

Hi Lyn, Thanks for writing. I usually get mine from the local organic food coop, or online. I have been researching how to make it. It looks quite easy and cheap, but it uses lye which means I wouldn't want to do it while my little one is awake.
