Hi Morag I was inspired after reading this to consider a rope making workshop for our homeschooling group... I've been compulsively picking up all sorts of bits of fibre and twisting them to see what happens. I also looked into extracting fibre from banana tree trunks - that looks simple, but a bit laborious and slow if you wanted to do it in any volume. My latest experiment has been cleaning an area of the concrete floor where we feed our pigs, and collecting from it the fibers they leave after chewing arrowroot stems. I haven't got them dried out after washing them yet, but I'm pretty sure I can twist those into some sort of cordage, and I didn't have to do the extracting!
