I am a night owl and love the quiet of the night to think and write. I typically get to bed somewhere between 2-3am. Yesterday though, I arranged a child-free day today to work on my book, The Simple Garden. I thought a full day of writing would be good to clearly plan my work.

After my family headed out, I quickly washed up, fed the animals then launched into it – researching, planning, mind-mapping … I was working but I wasn’t focussed or effective. To be honest it felt somewhat awkward without the usual hubbub of a household with a 3 year old and two boisterous homeschoolers (8 yo & 10 yo). I love the homeschool/unschool dynamic of active learning, following interests, getting into projects, discussions about fascinating questions that always arise.

I have been getting a bit frustrated that my work is beginning to leak into my time with the kids, and my evenings are getting later (quite a few 4 ams last week!). After my initial attempt at frantic typing and note-taking, I slowed down and found myself reflecting on the pace and fullness of my ‘simple life’ and how too much time is spent sitting at my computer. I decided that perhaps today would be better spent rediscovering my balance and inner calm – a wellbeing day.

I headed straight out into my garden to graze on the salad greens and have a chat with the birds and wildlife.

This mummy wallaby has a gorgeous little joey who has just lunged into the pouch when I took out my camera. They live mostly around garden. I see them every day.

Next I worked for a while with our wonderful Columbian WWOOFer who is making a new area of garden. He is getting this area ready for planting the things I give away at workshops – Lemongrass, Comfrey, Cassava, Arrowroot, Yacon, Tumeric, Galangal, Tulsi, Brazilian Spinach. It’s also a bigger area for potatoes etc.

Around lunchtime I took another break and headed off for a mind-fog-clearing ride up the valley. I love my bike. I always find clarity out riding and feel energised for the rest of the day. I don’t go too far – perhaps 10-15 kms with a few good hills. Like always, when I go out with a specific question, I found a sense of clarity again in purpose and direction.

Later in the afternoon, I headed 2kms up the road to a fabulous local organic farm – Baranbali. We play tennis together each week, but it seems ages since we had a chance to sit down, catch up and share our ideas. I put my computer to sleep again and headed over for a cuppa. A big cuddle with an orphaned lamb was a huge bonus!!! So cute – the kids had it on a little lead and walking it around the garden.

So today, instead of a writing blitz – I mostly wondered, wandered, gardened, cycled, visited. In the end I only spend 3 hours at my computer but to my amazement, I managed in that time to clearly lay out the chapters of my book and outline the framework for the next two. I have rethought my schedule for the next six months and clarified the direction for my next series of educational programs.

One of the little things I started today is a quick guide for simple living… and in an initial search for other similar guides, I uncovered this ‘Simple Living Manifesto’. I like it – the bit about ‘leaving out the unnecessary’ was a good reminder for me today. I’ll post my simple living guide soon when it’s finished.

School holidays are a wonderfully busy time for me as a permaculture educator and designer – especially with children’s workshops. This week was a particularly full one. I led 3 children’s permaculture workshops, a worm tower workshop for adults, helped a couple design an urban permaculture garden, and participated in PhD research about living an Off-grid lifestyle. Tomorrow is market day at Crystal Waters where we have a stall and I’ll be taking a people on a tour of the village and our place.

Each week my permaculture livelihood brings something different, interesting and challenging, and connects me with different communities and places. I always learn something new – about a plant, about a way of seeing the world, about an innovative technology… I love my work. This week I learnt from one of the mums from India that they mix Ajwain seeds with tulsi – the sacred basil I grow. Among other things, it can be used to sooth coughs and ease asthma. I am going to explore this plant more.

Rachel – historian, planner, earthship enthusiast and PhD researcher – interviewed me this week. It was great to have the chance to think about and articulate this. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her and hearing about her research too.

I’ve got my feet up now – not so much from being tired (OK – well a bit!!), but mostly because I feel happy and uplifted after a rewarding week of work. It could possibly also have something to do with the fact that I started the week on crutches (having torn a calf muscle composting last Friday!?!) and now it’s aching and bruised. I had to postpone a food forest consultancy early in the week because of the scale and steepness of their project – I just couldn’t envisage managing that on crutches. Next week I hope.

CHILDREN’S PERMACULTURE WORKSHOPS

I have an absolute ball with the children’s programs and am always delighted at their enthusiasm and knowledge. Together this week at libraries across Brisbane, I led free gardening sessions for almost 100 children. We made mini-wicking gardens and planted them with cuttings of permaculture plants from my garden. We made newspaper pots for perennial cuttings and egg carton seed trays for a diversity of seasonal annuals. We made origami seed envelopes too. We explored ecological systems thinking, permaculture design ideas, edible perennial propagation and seed saving, working toward a zero-waste system, simple living ideas, and ways to protect wildlife and nurture diversity.

WORM TOWER WORKSHOP

During the week I also ran an workshop for adults at the Forest Heart Nursery in Maleny about worm towers. The nursery is now the proud caretaker of a new colony of compost worms. Thanks to Hugh for breeding the worms. My eight year old son, Hugh, is now launching into his second enterprise – worm farming (his first is Hugh’s Bike Shed) to supply locals who want to set up worm tower systems. (have a look at this previous post for more worm tower information)

ENTERPRISING CHILDREN

Yesterday the kids and I were busy making things for this weekend’s Crystal Waters Monthly Market. We have an abundance of lemons and limes so they decided to make marmalade. They researched and trialled a few different methods and made 24 jars of delicious preserves to sell at the market. I have asked them to write these up – so hopefully you’ll see these recipes soon. Maia has decided to join Hugh in worm farming and they’ll have worms for sale too. It’s going to be a fun day with lots of friends and neighbours meeting at the village green.

I love community gardens. They are great places to be inspired – to learn how to garden and live simply and sustainably.

I was delighted to be invited to be the MC for the 2016 Open Day at Yandina Community Gardens Hundreds of people came to find interesting new ideas, to learn, to see, to taste, to smell, to share, to meet new and old friends. Parliamentary Speaker and local Independent Member of Parliament, Peter Wellington, officially opened the event.

Jerry Coleby-Williams, ABC Gardening Australia presenter, was the main speaker for the day. He talked about many things, but there were a couple of things in particular that impressed me. His jam-making prowess for one (which he attributes to his Nan’s instruction – she had a Dig for Victory garden in London). Jerry’s garden in Wynnum Brisbane, is somewhat like an old-style mixed market garden from which he creates many products for home use and for sale.

Secondly , I loved Jerry’s deep connection with his garden (a diverse edible oasis in suburban Brisbane) and how closely he observes and documents what happens in it. He set it up to be a demonstration of sustainability – but it has also become a site of scientific interest. In his garden he has found many new species of insects and he suggests that if we take time to look, we probably have some too.

How great – being discoverers of new species in your own little garden. Jerry suggests if you don’t know what a bug is, take pictures and send it to BowerBird for identification from leading experts associated with Museum Victoria – you never know! The kids are keen to do this as a homeschooling project.

I presented too about my adventures in getting out of the consumer-waste trap and I enjoyed listening to the other speakers including:

Anne Gibson who shared a simple way to easily create nutrient-dense food using micro-greens.

Elizabeth Fekonia who shared how to properly prepare legumes so they don’t cause stomach upsets (and gas!). I’ll write up the lessons I learnt soon.

Every time I venture into Maleny, my local town, I feel uplifted by the interactions – the conversations, the smiles, the help offered, even the way I can purchase things I need from locally owned stores.

This morning I met for morning coffee with Rhonda Hetzel, local bestselling author and award-winning blogger, who last year graciously offered to mentor me as a writer and blogger. With her support and encouragement I have felt brave enough to begin writing regularly. I am so very thankful to her for taking me under her wing. Rhonda’s blog about living simply, Down to Earth, is read across the globe and just clicked over 20 million pageviews. Rhonda has just returned from a road trip to launch her new book, The Simple Home. It’s in the window at Rosettas Bookshop in town. It was just so lovely to catch up with her, to share adventures and future plans.

After meeting with Rhonda, I went in search of presents for my 3 year old son – his birthday is this Saturday. In the newly renovated and expanded Endeavour Charity Store was the best little wooden cooker set. Perfect. Also I found a wicker picnic basket for us to go on outings together to the river. As unbirthday presents for the older two children, I found some amazing books in one of the second hand book stores. Finally I nipped around to the little wood store at the back of town to get a piece of exterior board. We have painted this with blackboard paint and will screw to the side of the house for Monty to draw on, write and create. It is so refreshing not having to resort to the major shopping centres.

To end my very enjoyable morning in town, I ventured into the Maleny Village Artisan Food Market for a bite to eat. I was looking in particular for my friends’ brand new sushi stall. Kentaro and Rovielle are just opening and are serving delicious sushi. I can personally recommend the vegetarian one.

I met Rovielle and Kentaro two years ago when they came to Crystal Waters to do a permaculture course. They haven’t really left! Since then they’ve been WWOOFing and housesitting – now they’ve settled in a bit more permanently with their own place and their new enterprise in Maleny. They are also leasing a little piece of land at Crystal Waters to grow authentic Japanese flavours for their sushi. I wish them all the very best.

Loaded up with my mind abuzz with ideas, the stomach nourished with good food, presents for the kids, I headed back down into the valley to Crystal Waters stopping along the way at Jim’s organic farm to stock up on some extra fruit and veg to supplement produce from my garden.

It was indeed a good morning in my local town!

Today we enjoyed rosella, lemon myrtle, lemon, ginger and honey iced tea after a productive morning of planting, adding companions, seed-sorting and seed-raising.

Young Hugh’s blends are so good he’s going to start making Hugh’s Herbal teas for Maia to serve at her monthly Owl’s Den Cafe. These two are a dynamic duo!

Hugh’s Rosella, Lemon Myrtle, Lemon and Ginger Tea

Ingredients

5 Rosella Calyces – remove seed pod

small chunk of ginger sliced

juice of one lemon

a few leaves of lemon myrtle

spoonful of honey to taste

Hugh’s Method

Harvest rosellas, lemon, and ginger

Chop the base off each rosella calyx and remove seedpods (Hugh was delighted to find a good use for his newly purchased multi-tool)

Place the red parts in a plunger

Juice the lemon and add to the mix

Scrunch the leaves of lemon myrtle

Chop or bruise the ginger

Fill plunger with boiling water

Let sit for 5 minutes

Pour and enjoy, perhaps with a spoonful of honey

Lovely too as an iced tea – simply add ice cubes

There are possibilities of making different blends just about every day. My other favourites are:

mint and lemongrass,

lemon myrtle and tulsi

turmeric tulsi and honey

straight chocolate mint

I have to say though I really am enjoying the current rosella season. To extend this a little, Hugh has dried some rosella calyces. We have been on the search for friends with more rosella too so we can dry even more. We think we have found someone and will exchange this for some of our turmeric surplus. Next year, I have decided I will plant even more Rosellas.

A little about Rosella:

Rosella is a hardy and easy plant to grow in the subtropics. It is an annual shrub up to 1.5 metres. I love the splash of colour it brings to the garden, and the amazing flavour sensation from the leaves and calyces. They are extremely hardy, but for a good crop, they do need to be well watered.

All parts of the Rosella are edible. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa) was originally from West Africa but is now used in many countries. Here in Queensland, it is popular to grow for it’s red fleshy calyces (the outer floral envelopes and seed pod protectors) which are often made into jams. I love it most as a simple tea.

Rosella is a colourful, flavourful and healthy drink to share with the children. It has a high vitamin C content – nine times that of oranges.

I also enjoy adding a few young leaves into a salad or cooked dish. In the past few evening, leaves of Rosella have been added to soup, to cheese and spinach parcels, to pasta sauce, to a curry vegetable dish. The green leaves are like a lemony spinach . It is understandable why another name for this plant is red sorrell. The leaves are perhaps the most widely eaten and popular vegetable in Burma.

The stems too can be stripped to make a jute-like fibre – when I try to snap off a branch or calyx without using secateurs, I realise how strong this could be!

My 9 year old daughter ran her second pop-up cafe today – the Owls Den Cafe. It was a sell-out event with guests from around the world. I am so proud of her and she’s absolutely delighted. Thanks to those who came to support her.

I’m so proud too with my 8 year son’s initiative. Hugh, who loves bicycles, set up his bike display to promote his eco-social enterprise – Hugh’s Bike Shed.

Both of them initiated these enterprises after I attended a workshop with Joel Salatin and he said that both his kids had on-farm enterprises by the time they were 9 years old. I asked them if they had anything they wanted to do. Within 30 minutes, they had each designed their concept ideas and have been implementing and refining the ideas ever since.

In the carport of our ecovillage home at Crystal Waters, Maia set up her Owls Den Cafe again today. This is her second monthly pop-up cafe – a homeschool project that offers a treasure trove of experiential and contextual learning – budgeting, graphic design, healthy foods, sustainability planning, project management, letter-writing, community service to name just a few.

Maia’s community came support her initiative and to taste the yummy food – so did friends from around the region, and several international visitors. This time she chose her wearable art shirt.

For a little cafe in a tucked-away place, Maia attracted an amazingly international crowd. There were people from Japan, Turkey, the U.S.A., England, Thailand, The Philippines… and friends travelled down the mountain from Maleny to support her initiative too.

Over lunch, Rin offered Maia and Hugh a Japanese lesson. Each day she is teaching them new phrases and words. WWOOFers are so fabulous.

Hugh was again at hand. He did some mowing of the grassy area, helped to set up, made a toy tub for the little kids, and was a loyal customer (I think he bought one of everything!). But he was there for his own enterprise too…

Hugh’s Bike Shed

Bike-mad Hugh had some bikes out to remind people of his community service project – Hugh’s Bike Shed. He fixes bikes – squeaky brakes, clunky gears, flat tyres… affordably and quickly. He also accepts donations of bikes that he can repair and either give away or hire to visitors. Today he received another bike donation and a request to hire two bikes for a week. He’s so happy too! Hugh and I will write more about his bike project soon.

The Social and Environmental focus of Maia’s cafe

Maia’s cafe had both social and environmental purposes. Amongst the many were:

to create a midweek meeting space for the locals

to cultivate community connections and conversations between all ages

to create a safe and interesting play space for the village children

to raise awareness about and give people a taste of deliciously healthy foods.

to create a waste-free cafe and demonstrate this

to raise awareness about endangered animals

to fundraise to support the protection of a different endangered species each time the cafe opens.

Maia just also loves cooking and serving people (and being her own boss by the looks of it). I was her humble employee for the day – paid in coffee, cake, hugs and a delightful note of thanks. What more could I ask?

She received such positive feedback from everyone who came to her cafe, for the food and the vibe. It certainly was a lovely space to spend the afternoon catching up with friends and neighbours and watching the children play.

Some of the environmental initiatives of The Owl’s Den Cafe:

table cloths – fair trade cotton and a selection of fabrics from second-hand stores

bamboo picnic plates – these we have had for 16 years (I am super impressed at their longevity)

drinks offered only in mugs and cups – no disposable cups

cupcakes made in reusable forms

solar powered coffee machine

rain water used for drinks

plastic-waste free cafe

(mostly) organic ingredients

foodscraps given to chooks (not many leftovers though!)

coffee grinds fed to worms

take-aways offered in brown paper bags (and some took them away in their hat!)

supports conservation of endangered species

Maia is using a proportion of the money she made today to sponsor a Snowy Owl – an endangered species threatened by habitat loss and poaching. Tonight when the sun went down, she was excited to hear an owl outside her bedroom. She’s always had a natural affinity with owls. This is the information poster she created and sent out with the invitations, and had on display today.

Maia’s Owl’s Den Cafe menu:

Most of the ingredients were organic, sourced at our local food cooperative. Instead of sugar we used stevia drops, and a little honey or a dash of coconut sugar. The icing on all but one cake was also sugar free.

Drinks:

citrus iced water – organic orange and lime juice (from our garden)

organic fair trade espresso coffee (she’s a fabulous barista already!)

lemon myrtle tea – (from our garden)

organic fair trade tea

Food:

orange poppy seed cake

chocolate cake – gluten free

carrot muffins

bliss balls – gluten free, dairy free

chia shortbreads

I’ll ask Maia to write up the recipes and post them soon – they were amazing!

Sugar free frosting:

For some time now we have been trying to find good toppings for our sugar free cakes. We were fed up of destroying them with sugary icing. So we’ve done some experimenting and come up with some super-delicious toppings (and a few disasters I should say). Our favourite topping was the fresh pure cream, raw cacao and stevia frosting for the chocolate cake. The cream cheese and stevia frosting on the carrot cake was amazing too.

As long as I can remember, Maia has been wanting to run a cafe.
This was a homeschool project for Maia. This cafe gave her an opportunity to explore so many topics in an integrated way – doing something that she loves.

Maia had prepared information sheets for these too which she emailed to everyone, and had just a few copies on hand today. The preserves were donated to us to help raise funds.

Children’s Tree Plant:

Maia has been involved in planning a children’s tree-planting to create a shaded walkway between the Crystal Waters village green park and the Mary River swimming hole. The planting happens in just over a week. The trees have been donated, the mulch is being collected locally too, but we need to buy the tree guards and stakes to protect the plants from deer and kangaroo.

At Maia’s cafe today she invited people to sponsor a tree. She had lots of great response and will continue to fundraise for the trees over the next week.

Critically Endangered Species:

I cannot remember a time when Maia was not passionate about protecting wildlife, particularly critically endangered and vulnerable species. As a 4yo, she taught herself how to research online to find out more information. Today she chose to raise money to adopt a Lynx through WWF – she chose the Lynx because it is one of the most critically endangered species on the planet.

She has already repaid me for buying ingredients, paid back Hugh for the float, gone online to adopt the lynx and has put aside the remaining money to be able to seed her next cafe. Her budgeting was spot-on.

Being a good leader and communicator, building community, caring for the environment, starting a social enterprise and learning about ethical entrepreneurship are such valuable skills for young people have – for them to be resilient and adaptive in a changing environment. With these skills, I hope that wherever my children find themselves – that they will be able to cultivate a sustainable livelihood, through sharing and connecting, creating and giving.

While Maia was busy hosting her great guinea-pig show at a recent Crystal Waters market, Hugh was at the ‘front-of-tent’ selling organic Curly Apples for a dollar with his school mate – ‘the springiest you will get’!

No-one could pass up the offer of a springy, curly organic apple prepared fresh on the spot by keen young lads. Parents were happy to supply their kids with this healthy snack to eat while they enjoyed the guinea-pig fashion parade.

I wonder what they will come up with for the next big market. We have markets here on the first Saturday of each month.

I raced home and told my 9 and 7 year old all about the talk and about Joel’s children. Within an hour both Maia and Hugh had come up with their own business names, projects and plans. I was absolutely amazed at how this real-life eco-entrepreneurial opportunity sparked such a creative buzz, and continues to do so.

Hugh started Hugh’s Bike Shed. He now fixes ‘squeaky breaks, clunky gears, flat tyres’ and generally services and cleans people’s bicycles. He has a steady flow of customers from around the neighbourhood. He is also receiving donations of bikes that he can restore and hire out to visitors to the ecovillage. His next project is the restoration of a tandem bike which will be great fun.

Maia started Southern Cross Guinea Pigs and has already designed her own website and business card. She designs and makes guinea pig clothing out of old clothes and organises guinea pig fashion shows at the local market – they have been so popular with kids and adults alike. A modest entry fee raises significant pocket money, and she is now trying to breed guinea pigs for sale. Another part of her plan is to make guinea pig herbal supplements and ointments from our garden. Already she has made comfrey superfood and comfrey salve.
