Tom Lakere is the latest recipient of the Permaculture Educators Course Scholarship! Over the past 18 months, we have donated $100,000 worth of courses to people around the world through the Permaculture Education Institute. You can be guaranteed that every time someone buys a PDC course, at least one extra person is gifted a permaculture education – usually a woman or local youth leader in the Global South.

The Permaculture Education Institute is dedicated to making permaculture education accessible to all. Particularly at the moment, there is a great need for permaculture teaching and practice in refugee camps around the world.

My main criteria for selecting recipients for this Scholarship, is that they are seeking to ripple out positive action in their local communities through permaculture education programs and demonstration gardens – sharing it amongst their community and supporting people care, earth regeneration, food security and local economic development. Also that they can participate in the global network of mutual learning.

I first met Tom at the September Global Permayouth Festival

The Global Permayouth Festival is an online event that enables youth from all around the world, who love permaculture and sustainability, to come together and collaborate for positive change. Tom was encouraged to attend the festival by my friend, Marie-Pierre at Refarmers. Tom does a lot of incredible work in and around his local community.

After speaking with Tom again at the October Global Permayouth Festival, I was blown away by his drive to learn permaculture and use the skills to help his community and the world. He is 19 and lives in Kitgum Town, in the very north of Uganda.

Kitgum – as Tom explains in further details below – was devastated by the LRA insurgency only 20 years ago and still today faces food insecurity, poverty, pollution and many other challenges.

Before COVID-19, Tom was at school in Kampala

Due to the pandemic, he had to come home from school and effectively end his education. This is when he was recruited by Refarmers Project Manager, Paul Kidega. These unexpected events have now completely changed his life and offered him so many new opportunities.

At only 19 years of age, Tom has already started his own climate action youth group called Green World Initiative, and reached out to the Permayouth group in Rwamwanja Refugee Camp to organise future learning opportunities for people in his home town.
What’s even more impressive? He has done this all of this in his own time and through his own volition. We found out through Refarmers that he even saved up his small stipend from working on the Grandmothers Kitchen Garden Project this year, and has used it to buy himself a laptop!

Tom’s mission

Tom is only 16, and already he sees the challenges that we are facing in the world and is striving to make an improvement.

“I want to learn permaculture primarily to contribute to solutions in my local community, nation and the globe. I am seeking to circumvent its various challenges and hardships, which I believe through permaculture can be solved. Secondly, I developed passion and desire to learn and grow in permaculture from my experience at Permayouth Festival, which has totally changed my whole perspective of life.

“I am living in a post insurgency region, a region which had been in war for twenty years and challenges such as mental illness, food insecurity, hunger, poverty, gender based violence, pollution, climatic and environmental destruction forms part of the just unending list of the many challenges my community is facing.” – Tom

About the Scholarship

The Permaculture Educator’s Program is the only place to earn an internationally-recognised Permaculture Design Certificate and a Permaculture Teacher Certificate together online. The scholarship is valued at $2497 and will help Tom connect with other students in 6 continents. He will also have the support of a group who are also participating in the Course (through scholarships) in Uganda and other parts of East Africa.

“This double woven permaculture course will empower and give me the foundation on which Actions and alternative problem solving measures can be ushered grounded on its principles and ethics. The PTC will contribute much to the psycho-social supports, attitude and mindset shift in my community.

“Generally, this course (the Permaculture Design Course) will transform me into an all-round change maker capable of doing and as well showing my community how it is done (by putting into use my skills learned in the Permaculture Educators Course).” – Tom

Where to from here?

Tom was awarded the scholarship only a few weeks ago, but I’ve heard from my friends at Refarmers that he has already started the online course. Before we know it, Tom will be a certified permaculture educator and will be able to support his goals and create positive solutions in not only his own community but around the world too.

Update: 16th November

Tom is on his way now to meet Bemeriki in the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement. Bemeriki is the leader of the Permayouth in Uganda. They will be collaborating on an exciting new opportunity – more details to come shortly!

From myself, and everyone the Permaculture Education Institute and Permayouth, I can say that we all feel so blessed to be able to support Tom’s mission by providing him with this course Scholarship.

Welcome to the Course Tom! Keep up the amazing work.

My name is Morag Gamble and I am the founder of Ethos Foundation – a permaculture charity that helps to make permaculture education accessible to communities around the world. Right now, we are seeking to raise $2000 to fund Sakina Kiriba so that she can travel from Kenya to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to teach Permaculture.

This is an exciting opportunity on so many levels! Sakina was born in DRC, but she hasn’t been there in 11 years since she was forced to flee to the Kakuma Refugee Camp due to political unrest in her City.

About the opportunity

Recently an organisation called ‘Act in Solidarity with the Vulnerable of War’ invited Sakina to teach 20 war veterans in DRC about Permaculture. This organisation aims to help support these 20 war veterans, who have suffered hardships during the war and are now homeless due to the destruction of their properties. Sakina will run a program with them to teach Permaculture farming methods. This will help them earn money and begin to rebuild their lives. Sakina has told us that a lot of these people believe it is not possible to grow food without chemicals. This belief often leads to dangerous chemical exposure and crops that don’t provide an income. She believes that by teaching them about Permaculture, it will help to improve their health and the health of the environment. Beyond even this, she hopes that it will start a ripple effect that could change farming practices in DRC forever.

When Sakina approached us early last week to help fund her trip, she spoke about what the opportunity would mean for her.

“I would like to go and teach permaculture in Bukavu (DRC). Firstly because I love my people and have seen the great importance of permaculture and its many benefits. I have been fortunate to be well educated – I would like to share this education so that it can be good for my country and my people too.”

Meet Sakina

Sakina was sponsored by Ethos Foundation to complete the Permaculture Educators Course through the Permaculture Education Institute. In her refugee community of Kakuma, she now leads many initiatives including a Permayouth group (pictured below).

Sakina goes on to say

“I know that my country (DRC – her origin country) is large and is rich and valuable in many ways – it has forests and rivers – but people lack the education to use these resources. I believe that the way I received an education about sustainable farming is good. It has meant that people around me can also benefit from better farming practices. If I can spread this knowledge, then the people who I teach can teach others and this will mean that people in my neighbouring countries will eventually benefit from good food by these permaculture farming techniques.”

The current situation in Sakina’s town of birth in DRC is still dangerous, which means she is unable to return there. However, she is able to visit Bukavu, where the situation is a lot better and it is now safe for her to return. While it’s not exactly the reunion she was hoping for, Sakina is very excited to go home to her birth Country. She hopes to head to Bukavu next month, to begin teaching the group of 20 war veterans about Permaculture.

How can you help?

Please donate at www.ethosfoundation.org.au to help us reach $2000 before October. This money will be used to sponsor Sakina to travel from Kenya to DRC, her accommodation while there, and any teaching expenses. How to donate? Click the ‘Donate’ at the top right of the website. Once there, select the ‘For Sakina to teach Permaculture to Homeless War Veterans in DRC’ option.

We guarantee that 100% of the funds donated go directly to Sakina and will see her heading to DRC in early October (or as soon as she can).

If you are unable to donate, then please share this blog to help spread the word. The more people who see this, the more help we can get to make Sakina’s goal a reality.

Thank you for all your support and for reading this blog. If you have any questions about Sakina, this project, or Ethos Foundation, please leave a comment below.

My feet are really in need of some loving care. I love barefoot gardening and wearing open shoes. I’m a busy mum of three active young kids and I’m afraid my feet have been, well …. neglected.

I am paying attention today because they are so cracked and sore, and because we made some lovely scrubs and salves yesterday at a workshop I held here in my garden (DIY Natural Health and Beauty Products) – just what my feet are calling for. These things can be made easily and cheaply.

I knew my feet were in need of attention, but I recently bought a new pair of summer season shoes that seem to be ripping up my soles and aggravating the problem. Back to closed shoes I think and a week of intensive care….

I’m going to take pictures every day and show you at the end of the week how well this has worked.

This is my three step process. It’s easy to do in the evening while I sit here and write, and catch up on emails.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar Soak

The warm vinegar soak softens the skin making it easier to remove the dead skin. I put in half a cup of vinegar into enough warm water to cover my feet and soaked them for 15 minutes.

2. Mint Sugar Scrub

This was the biggest hit of all at the DIY Natural Health and Beauty Products yesterday class I think. It immediately makes your hands and feet feel great, and it’s super easy. Immediately after the vinegar soak, while my heels are soft, I am using this scrub to help remove the dry skin and to soften, revive and nourish too.

2 tbsp coconut oil

2 tbsp raw sugar

6 leaves chopped mint

zest of half a grapefruit (optional)

Soften the coconut oil if solid (I put the coconut oil in a bowl, then place this bowl in hot water till softened), then mix in the other ingredients. Store the scrub in a sealed jar/tin in the fridge and soften just before use.

NB: Make sure you don’t add the sugar to hot oil otherwise it will melt and not be a scrub, and don’t soften later in hot water either.

3. Herb Beeswax Salve

I have massaged this healing salve into my sore heals and have put on some socks for the evening to help it really do it’s job.

1/2 cup olive oil infused with comfrey, chickweed and calendula infused oil. (see my previous post on how to make a simple cold infused herbal oil http://our-permaculture-life.blogspot.com.au/2015/11/making-comfrey-oil.html)

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup pure beeswax

2 tbsp cocoa butter

On a double boiler (or with a ceramic bowl over boiling water), gently melt the beeswax, coconut oil and cocoa butter.

When fully blended remove from heat and allow to cool.

When still runny, but warm (not hot) add the herb infused oil.

Pour into jars or tins and allow to cool and solidify.

I’ll be repeating this every night for the next few days and going to bed with more salve and bed socks.

These are the things we made in the workshop. Everyone went home with a collection of herb oil, healing salve, hand and face cream and lip balm.

There are still places on both of the these if you’d like to come and spend a day in my garden with me learning and creating. We have fun, learn a lot from each other and eat deliciously healthy food!

For over 20 years I’ve been setting up permaculture and community gardens, and have travelled the world teaching about and researching permaculture in 20 countries. For the past 18 years, I’ve been based here at the United Nations award-winning Crystal Waters Permaculture Village and have developed my own permaculture teaching garden for which I received a Glossies Edible Landscaping Award. I often host groups here – from young children, high school students, university groups and adult workshops. A constant stream of WWOOFers come to learn here too.

THE BENEFITS OF BIOCHAR

Biochar enhances soils and makes it more fertile. It also increases the capacity of the soil to sequester carbon.

When biochar is added into the soil it creates homes for microorganisms, increases the water holding capacity of soils, adsorbs nutrients, aerates soil, breaks up clay – healthier soil grows healthier plants that are more nutrient dense – so it’s good for the environment and supports the growing of healthier food too.

Biochar production is inspired by the soils created by indigenous people in Amazon Basin – islands of rich, fertile soils called terra preta (“dark earth”).

THE USES OF BIOCHAR

There are many uses for biochar – improving soil, sequestering carbon, fuel for cooking, heat for power generation. It is also useful in water filtration, insulation, energy storage and much more (read the link below – 55 Uses for Biochar). In this article they argue that Biochar so valuable that it should be used at least once before getting worked into the soil.

In the garden, Biochar can be scattered out but it’s best mixed with compost or liquid fertilisers, and added into no-dig gardens, and covered with mulch.

Education of a different kind, for the whole person, for a positive and peaceful, ecological future is what the world needs. Over the past 25 years I have spent time in many amazing places that offer this kind of educational experience. They have transformed my thinking, my attitudes, my direction in life, sense of purpose, my capacity for action and my passion for life.

Around the world there are a number of centres that fully engage you intellectually, practically and emotionally. I call them centres for positive change and below I’ve provided links to some I personally know.

One of the most transformative experiences for me was spending about a year at Schumacher College in England, as a student in 1992 and as a guest scholar on a course called Design for Life in 2003 with Janine Benyus (biomimicry). The course I ran was also a Permaculture Design Course. Schumacher College is essentially a green university – I love it!

Back in 1992, I so was incredibly inspired by learning at Schumacher College with people such as Fritjof Capra, Vandana Shiva, Helena Norberg-Hodge and Satish Kumar. Immediately after taking courses at the college I made a pilgrimage around the UK to places such as Findhorn, Scotland and the Centre for Alternative Technology, Wales.

I had also arranged with Helena to volunteer in Ladakh with her at the Ladakh Project (Local Futures). While in India, I also visited Vandana’s Navdanya Project (since evolved into Bija Vidyapeeth or Earth University). My mind was exploded and my heart sang with possibilities.

A few years later, I visited Fritjof Capra a few times in Berkeley California. He introduced me to the Center for Ecoliteracy which he founded and the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center – places rethinking education and supporting teachers to change. Creating opportunities for children to experience connection with nature and to be exposed to ecological systems thinking has been at the forefront of my work since. (Fritjof had also been a regular teacher at the Esalen Institute.)

ETHOS FOUNDATION

Back at home, I have been persistently passionate about creating similar opportunities here in Australia for locals and for people around the world who would love to come together to:

connect with nature, community and self

deepen our understanding of the ecological paradigm

explore thinking and ideas that will help guide us towards a sustainable future

experience a different, more connected way of living and thinking

learn very practical skills for living simply and sustainably

nurture young leaders in sustainability

offer nature connected education for children

After many years – helping to start Northey Street City Farm, the Australian City Farms and Community Gardens Network, school garden projects, Local Futures study circles, offering permaculture education in 20 countries, I am now focussing all my efforts on creating a space for head, heart and hands learning, predominantly based here at the ecovillage.

This is what my organisation the Ethos Foundation, a not-for-profit charity, is all about. I have created programs such as Nature Kids, Young Ethos Scholars, and Permaculture Life and will be offering a few Permaculture Design Courses (PDC) each year. I see the PDC is an amazing door to a more sustainable way of life.

Hundreds of seedballs were flung across the Ethos Farm today at the Ethos Farm Crystal Waters Permaculture Village by a wonderfully enthusiastic group of children participating in our Nature Kids program. Tonight the rain came and watered them in.

Thanks to the children and families for making so so many seedballs and for very eagerly flinging them out into our emerging farm plot. We are just at the beginning of this project so seedballing seems a wonderfully easy way to get things started and improve the soil too.

And thank you rain – such perfect timing to come tonight to water them all in. The thing is, if it hadn’t come tonight, it would have been fine too. The seedballs are designed to protect the seeds while they wait for the rain to come. They can wait for months, possibly years until the rain swells the clay and activates the seeds inside.

The children and their families were at Ethos Farm today participating in the inaugural Seedball Slingshot Games – one of our Nature Kids program.

I selected beans and sunflowers to be put in the seedballs. These are easy to grow and great for the kids to come back to see (and taste) soon. The beans will provide food, organic matter and soil improvement. The sunflowers will add beauty and colour, as well as provide growing frames for the beans, organic matter and attract pollinators. We also added a few marigolds into the mix too for their edible flowers, colour, attract beneficial insects. Some companion planting guides suggest that sunflowers inhibit the growth of beans, other guides suggest it’s good. I’m love to experiment to check it out myself and see what happens. I hope it will be a happy partnership – we’ll see!

We have a great clump of clay remaining and will be making many more balls this week with a range of different seeds – to add more diversity into the mix.

I can’t wait to see the field blossoming with sunflowers and ranging through tasting fresh green beans. I think then I’ll organise a bean feast so we can all share the harvest.

Children designed and made an ecovillage at Crystal Waters Permaculture Village this Saturday. They immersed themselves in design thinking and creating a collaborative model from recycled and natural materials. The creative vibe was just absolutely amazing.

This was the first Ethos Foundation Nature Kids programs for 2016. I have many more planned. The kids and I had a ball and so many parents joined in. It was a great family morning at Crystal Waters – bringing so much activity to the village green – fantastic.

Over 30 children participated with their parents and siblings.

After an initial design brief and discussion the children set off to design and build. In self-selected teams and individually, the children designed and built a vibrant ecovillage around a central community space. In the centre, they included a community centre, a bakery, a cafe, a shop, a medical clinic, a farm, and around the edges were several homes. They considered orientation, materials use, energy production, rainwater harvesting, access and much more.

The children made their structures from cardboard boxes, bamboo, hemp string, pegs, clips, old sheets, fabric offcuts, and decorated with paint and found items from the garden. The structures went up quickly, then the exciting part came – crafting the details, creating ecovillage stories together, and visiting each other’s places in the ecovillage.

There was a big rain the night before this event, and so many ants had come out of the ground. There were quite a few bites unfortunately, but this led to the design and construction of a bite clinic complete with aloe vera sticks inside.

I was so impressed at how focussed they were and how cooperatively they worked together to create a cohesive village environment. I was so impressed too by the rich fabric of stories woven about the spaces the created.

Ecological design, creating sustainable living environments and considering what it means to have a sustainable lifestyle are such important skills for this young generation to be cultivating. My goal with designing and offering Nature Kids, Young Ethos Scholars and Earth School programs is to create opportunities for children of all ages to delve deeply into thinking about the future in positive ways, experiencing ecological thinking and action, and finding ways to apply that knowledge and experience.

I think it is critically important for children to hear about and experience more ecological and nature-connected forms of human development and to share this with other children – to explore ideas together, to teach each other, and to explore what a regenerative, positive and joyful future may look like.
