What a start to the year we’ve had! It’s going to take some time to come to grips with such a disaster and loss.  The planet and our communities desperately need care, repair and regeneration.

We need more permaculture teachers in the world – practical activists, educators and designers. Will you join us in the Permaculture Educators Program in 2020 to be a positive changemaker?

Today, we are here in Victoria, on the edge of the evacuation zone (just lifted) of the bushfire infernos that have been ravaging this region, helping my parents get fire-ready – the fire season is not over yet. The sky is filled with thick smoke and helicopters are buzzing constantly overhead, airlifting people to safety and taking supplies to cut-off communities. Back at Crystal Waters, our home base, there is a declared drought with severe water restrictions. Our friends elsewhere send us messages and photos of the impact of unseasonal heavy rains and floods, and epic locust plagues. Climate change is our daily living reality. These things are all exacerbated by climate change.

We sincerely hope have been keeping safe and that 2020 is shaping up to be full of new opportunities for connecting with the things you love and matter most. I know for me, being close to these recent bushfire infernos has made me even more resolved to amplify the work we do in supporting earth repair and community care. It is needed in so many ways and so many places.

I am also grateful to you for being part of our permaculture community in 2019 – directly or indirectly, and for your kind support as we reached out to help our friends in the global south. Your contributions have brought positive change.

We are excited to encourage, mentor and support people around the world to follow their interest and passion for living more sustainably; to create an ethical permaculture livelihood; to become a permaculture ambassador locally and globally; and to be part of the solution to the climate and ecological crises we face together.

The message is clear. The Earth urgently needs care, repair, and regeneration. We need to rapidly build greater awareness about how to live a one-planet-life, and share the skills to create resilient homes and communities. As I mentioned already, all of this highlights the need for many more permaculture practitioners, designers and teachers everywhere!
