Thank you and Merry Christmas to everyone who’s responded so positively to the writings and films I’ve been posting on Our Permaculture Life – on this Blog, on Youtube and Facebook,

After decades of ‘just doing it’, I was encouraged a year ago to start writing about our permaculture way of life and have received such amazing feedback both in person and online. It is so uplifting to know so many people are interested in living a simple &natural way of life.

I so enjoy receiving the comments you write, and participating in discussions about the various topics. I’d love your suggestions too (please fill in the v.quick survey below).

The ripple effect of our actions, our words, our thoughts – our work and the way we choose to live – is profound. It’s so important to be thinking about change – exploring the possibilities and taking positive, practical steps.

The inspiration…

My son, Hugh, was inspired to find a simpler and better way to extract worms from a worm farm. He was selling worm tower kits at the local market and was getting tired of the long process of separating the worms from the castings. He knew there had to be a better way …

Hugh’s method of collecting worms had us harvesting an abundance of worms so rapidly.

The typical method – too slow for Hugh

We had taught Hugh the typical method of separating worms, but he found it was fiddly and took too long. The standard method is up-ending a worm farm on a table or other smooth surface and mounding it up like a volcano. The worms move away from the heat and light towards the centre. Bit by bit you gently scrape away the castings, wait, scrape some more etc… and you are eventually left with a bundle of worms in the middle.

The typical method of separating castings from worms. Mound it up, scrape it off …. repeat a few times…

This method is still good for collecting the castings for your garden since you are rescuing most of the worms to put back into the farm. If however you are particularly wanting to extract bundles of worms for whatever reason – to feed to chickens, for fishing bait, for a micro-enterprise as Hugh was doing – I’ve not come across a simpler way.

Hugh’s ingenious idea…

You’re not going to believe how remarkably simple this method is, and just how effective it is. I love that Hugh brought his creative thinking to a challenge he was facing and found a solution. This method he has developed is a standout – it revolutionises the process, making it so easy and convenient. Essentially, he decided it would be much easier to entice the worms to come to him. Check it out how he does this in our short 3 minute youtube clip (link above).

Please share….

Please share our little video and spread Hugh’s positive idea. Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/moraggambleourpermaculturelife to get notice of each new movie I make.
Seedballs are a natural way to seed a landscape and can be filled with all types of seeds – natives, pioneer species, green manures, salad greens, wildflowers …. whatever your climate, landscape and situation.

Seedballing is an ancient technique from Egypt, China and the Romans and renewed in the 1940’s by the late, Masanobu Fukuoka, who is considered the founder of Natural Farming, and an inspiration for permaculture Fukuoka used seedballs extensively to rehabilitate damaged lands and practice no-till farming.

The mix we use is:
5 parts clay
1 part compost
big handful of seed

We mix the clay and compost together with the seeds until a firm ball can be made. I try to keep the balls just bigger than a 10c piece and allow them to dry before distributing them.

The idea is that the seeds are protected inside the seedball from birds, rats and other seed-eating creatures until the rain comes and moistens the clay. The seed makes the most of this moisture and then the compost nutrients help it to continue to grow.

You can read more about seedballs on a previous posts: Muddy hands, happy hearts: seedballs for healthy soils and diversity and A Wonderfully Easy and Fun Way to Seed a Garden: Seedballing with Nature Kids

You might want to explore more about this no-till approach to farming.

I am a night owl and love the quiet of the night to think and write. I typically get to bed somewhere between 2-3am. Yesterday though, I arranged a child-free day today to work on my book, The Simple Garden. I thought a full day of writing would be good to clearly plan my work.

After my family headed out, I quickly washed up, fed the animals then launched into it – researching, planning, mind-mapping … I was working but I wasn’t focussed or effective. To be honest it felt somewhat awkward without the usual hubbub of a household with a 3 year old and two boisterous homeschoolers (8 yo & 10 yo). I love the homeschool/unschool dynamic of active learning, following interests, getting into projects, discussions about fascinating questions that always arise.

I have been getting a bit frustrated that my work is beginning to leak into my time with the kids, and my evenings are getting later (quite a few 4 ams last week!). After my initial attempt at frantic typing and note-taking, I slowed down and found myself reflecting on the pace and fullness of my ‘simple life’ and how too much time is spent sitting at my computer. I decided that perhaps today would be better spent rediscovering my balance and inner calm – a wellbeing day.

I headed straight out into my garden to graze on the salad greens and have a chat with the birds and wildlife.

This mummy wallaby has a gorgeous little joey who has just lunged into the pouch when I took out my camera. They live mostly around garden. I see them every day.

Next I worked for a while with our wonderful Columbian WWOOFer who is making a new area of garden. He is getting this area ready for planting the things I give away at workshops – Lemongrass, Comfrey, Cassava, Arrowroot, Yacon, Tumeric, Galangal, Tulsi, Brazilian Spinach. It’s also a bigger area for potatoes etc.

Around lunchtime I took another break and headed off for a mind-fog-clearing ride up the valley. I love my bike. I always find clarity out riding and feel energised for the rest of the day. I don’t go too far – perhaps 10-15 kms with a few good hills. Like always, when I go out with a specific question, I found a sense of clarity again in purpose and direction.

Later in the afternoon, I headed 2kms up the road to a fabulous local organic farm – Baranbali. We play tennis together each week, but it seems ages since we had a chance to sit down, catch up and share our ideas. I put my computer to sleep again and headed over for a cuppa. A big cuddle with an orphaned lamb was a huge bonus!!! So cute – the kids had it on a little lead and walking it around the garden.

So today, instead of a writing blitz – I mostly wondered, wandered, gardened, cycled, visited. In the end I only spend 3 hours at my computer but to my amazement, I managed in that time to clearly lay out the chapters of my book and outline the framework for the next two. I have rethought my schedule for the next six months and clarified the direction for my next series of educational programs.

One of the little things I started today is a quick guide for simple living… and in an initial search for other similar guides, I uncovered this ‘Simple Living Manifesto’. I like it – the bit about ‘leaving out the unnecessary’ was a good reminder for me today. I’ll post my simple living guide soon when it’s finished.

Vandana Shiva is a seed advocate, permaculture supporter and tireless campaigner for earth democracy and food sovereignty. She spoke in April about Making Peace with the Earth at the Powerhouse in Brisbane to a packed audience.

I took my 10yo daughter – it was a fabulous evening listening to Vandana again. I always feel so deeply inspired and motivated when I hear her speak. I also loved the chance to reconnect with a lot of old friends from around the region – people I have met through sustainability, permaculture and community projects over the past 2 decades.

Maia was engrossed and I could tell straight away that she learnt so much that night. I love being able to expose her to the thinking and ideas of people like this. I can imagine the this will stay with her a long time.

VANDANA SHIVA PODCAST

I’ve made a link here to Vandana’s Powerhouse talk. It was recorded and played on Paul Barclay’s Big Ideas show on Radio National on 13 June 2016:

IN 1972, the United Nations designated June 5th as World Environment Day to address major issues such as climate change, deforestation, species extinction, food and farming…and two years later was the first celebration with the theme of “Only One Earth”.

The koala is the focus of our World Environment Day discussions. The koala was hunted almost to extinction in Australia by 1925. Conservation efforts have helped to protect and restore populations, but in Queensland they are officially regarded as ‘Critically Endangered’. Our son, Hugh has decided to focus on how to help the Koala as part of his homeschooling from now.

The theme for 2016 is GO WILD FOR LIFE: Zero tolerance for the illegal wildlife trade

‘The booming illegal trade in wildlife products is eroding Earth’s precious biodiversity, robbing us of our natural heritage and driving whole species to the brink of extinction. The killing and smuggling is also undermining economies and ecoystems, fuelling organized crime, and feeding corruption and insecurity across the globe.

This year’s theme for WED – Go Wild for Life – encourages you to celebrate all those species under threat and take action of your own to help safeguard them for future generations. This can be about animals or plants that are threatened within your local area as well as at the national or global level – many local extinctions will eventually add up to a global extinction! Whoever you are, and wherever you live, show zero-tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife in word and deed, and make a difference.’

www.WED2016.com

Taking a look into the theme of this World Environment Day brings some shocking truths out about illegal wildlife trading. For example:

•100,000 elephants killed between 2010 and 2012!

•a huge 170 tonnes of ivory illegally exported from Africa from 2004 – 2014

•as of 2016, chimpanzees are now extinct (in several countries they used to exist)

•3000 great apes lost from the wild each year

•almost 1200 rhinos killed by poachers in Africa in 2015

Let’s just take the last one from this list – the Rhino. Rhinos have been killed their horns which are mostly used in medicine. For a huge fee, you can buy it ground, mix it with water and swallow. People believe that rhino horn can treat a vast array of ailments including cancer.

Thorough tests however show it has absolutely no medicinal qualities. Perhaps the myth all began with the belief in the power of the unicorn’s horn – and the rhino’s horn is kind-of similar to that. Rhino horn is mostly keratin, the same as all hooves, horns, hair and nails. It’s indigestible – it simply passes straight through you with no effect.

So, the upshot is, Rhinos are being killed for no good reason and the people suffering from illnesses are wasting their time and money. The only people benefitting from rhino horn are those profiting from its illegal trade.

These newspaper pots are fun, quick and easy to make – no sticky-tape, no string or elastic bands either, just old newspapers. They are great for seeds and little cuttings.

I had been using the paper roll method for years (and a similar version made of wood), but last weekend I came across another method – the origami pot. I like it too because it creates slightly larger pots that are great for cuttings.

I often run permaculture workshops for children. In one of these I show them how to make the pots, how to collect, plant and care for seeds, and how to take cuttings from herbs and perennial plants – great food-growing skills for us all to have.

These little origami pots were in the kids corner at the Small Farmers tent at the Maleny Show last weekend where I spoke about permaculture design thinking. After packing up, I couldn’t resist stopping and making a few to take home for my kids.

Here’s how to make both the roll and the origami pot…

METHOD 1: THE PAPER ROLL POT

Chop newspaper sheets in thirds. Place the toilet roll insert or paper towel insert at one end. Make sure the roll hangs over the edge enough to grab hold of it.

Roll the paper up and poke the end into the bottom of the pot firmly – this makes it secure and stable.

Make a bunch of these origami pots, line them up, fill them with soil and seeds. Grouping them gives them stability.

Keep them on your windowsill or verandah until sprouted and be put in the garden or in larger pots.

It’s a good idea to put them on a tray to avoid seepage on your bench.

They can be kept folded and flat, so it’s a nice idea to have some ready for when a spontaneous planting moment arises and you need some little pots ready to go.

Enjoy!
